Staying active after having kids can be difficult, but you shouldn’t have to pause your active lifestyle after kids join your family. We will cover the keys to keeping your sanity when you take kids on a run.
Take Kids on a Run in a….
For kids four years or under, you will need a safe way to bring them along with you. You can take your kids on a run in a jogging stroller (Bob Gear, Thule, or Baby Trend to name a few) or a bike trailer that you can convert with jogging accessories.
Several factors to consider are:
- How many kids you plan to run with? (1, 2 or 3)
- What form factor is important to you? (Stroller or Trailer)
- What distances and frequency you plan to run? (Short, Medium, Long)
- Where are you are planning to run? (Paved Streets, Gravel Paths)
- What is your budget? (Low, Medium, High)
I will run year-round with up to two kids on gravel trails and will also use the biking capability, so I decided to go with a bike trailer. I wrote about my experience using the Thule Chariot 2 here. Once you purchase the stroller or trailer, there are a few things to get together before you head out.
Ready to Go!
You’re ready to hit the road with your kid(s) to stay active and bring a unique experience. Before you take kids on a run, here is an easy checklist to ensure you have the smoothest experience for your kids:
- Snacks – kids always get hungry at the most random times and you will always get the question for a snack. Have a bag of crackers ready to go in case of an emergency.
- Diapers – be ready to change a diaper or two depending on how far you are going and how old your kids are. This includes changing pad, diapers, and wipes.
- Sunscreen – for yourself and your kids. Shades are really good for keeping the sun off of your kids, but nothing is perfect, especially in the hot son.
- First aid kit – would be good to have even if it’s just bandages. One wrong bump and you could have a spill. It may be something good to have in case you run into an issue.
- Drinks – water is probably preferred to avoid messes, but a beverage would be helpful, especially if it gets hot for your kids. Also, have a drink for yourself, since this trailer is not pushing itself.
- Books/Toys – I’m big into trying to get kids interested in non-screen things before resorting to screens. Bring a favorite book or two. My toddler likes to look at pictures of a few books. The favorite books changes daily, so be prepared. If bringing two kids, be prepared for multiples to avoid fighting.
- Bluetooth speaker – could be a cool way to play some music and keep kids entertained. My toddler does like to sing along to kids songs if you need something to keep them really engaged. I’ve had success with really any upbeat genre.
- Screen – a phone or tablet could be a good last resort we need to get home and please stop the meltdown device.
- Rain shield – this could be helpful during an expected rain. Many strollers and bike trailers come with a rain shield that can be quickly put on the trailer in case of unexpected rain.
- Planned stop – it’s great to have a park or other attraction to stop at along the way. It will help your kids know that there is something for them to look forward to.
Don’t Forget
Your kids should be comfortable and entertained along the way. This includes ensuring you have snacks, drinks, changed diapers, and any appropriate items before heading out. I’m not sure how your kids are, but my toddler will continue to ask for crackers over and over even though I don’t have them. Make sure you have them! Your kids will look forward to the experience and you can continue an active lifestyle!
