Thule Chariot Runs Better than Expected in the Snow

I took my son out in our Thule Chariot with the running attachment after a snowfall. It was quite the experience! Ultimately, the Chariot runs better than expected, so you can keep running with your kids in the cold.

Runs Better than Expected

I have the Thule Chariot Cross 2 double multi-sport bike trailer. You can buy a kit to attach a running wheel to the front. This front wheel is fixed and does not turn. I wanted something I could run with my kids with some kind of enclosure that would protect them from the elements. I wrote about it here. The Thule has windows on either side, a small vent in the front, vent in back, and you can add a clear cover to the front that will keep out the wind and snow. If dressed correctly, your kids will be comfortable.

After we bundled up and headed out on the sunny 30 degrees Fahrenheit day, here’s what I learned:

  • Big wheels handle the snow well– The big wheels were great through the snow. Although this is a little heavy for running, it does handle snow very well. There wasn’t any slipping and I didn’t feel the tires lose grip. It carved through the snow well.
  • My son wasn’t cold – My son was warm the entire run. We were out for about 45 minutes including a stop at a park. He had enough space to stretch out and read a book. He could also see everything around him through the clear enclosure that kept out the elements.
  • You won’t lose anything – Since the Chariot is enclosed, I don’t have to worry about books or toys jumping out of the Chariot. I don’t have to back track to find his favorite race car on our running path.
  • You have something to hold on to – If you do hit a patch of ice, as long as you are keeping your weight forward, you can use the Chariot to help keep your balance. Make sure you wear the right footwear and utilize the wrist strap to make sure you don’t lose your precious cargo down a hill.

It turned out to be quite the afternoon! The Chariot kept my son warm. I had an extra layer on, so I stayed warm too. It definitely runs better than expected. If you can get past the size and weight, it is a great vehicle to get your young kids out on a run with you.

Doing this all over, I would probably have gone with a single instead of the double Chariot. I usually only take out one of my kids when I go out for a run. On the flip side, it is nice to have the double when they both want to join you. The double is really only good for a few years, because one of your kids will out grow it. I hope these tips were helpful and you enjoy spending time with your kids in a unique way. Stay warm!
