There’s something different about running in the snow. When snow is falling and the tree branches are covered, the altered reality makes it feels like you are running on clouds. It feels like you are in a different world. Running in the snow is the best and we will share a few ideas to make it enjoyable.
Running in the Snow
If you are in an area that gets cold weather, it can be difficult to keep getting those miles in. I personally try to set limits. I do not run outdoors if the temperature gets below 20 F (unless I need to get out). There can be long stretches where temperatures dip below your threshold. Cold weather aside, if there is a day with snow forecasted, my advice would be to take advantage of a run in the snow!
Here are a couple of tips to make it enjoyable:
- Wear the right shoes – the last thing you want to do is fall on your face when running. I don’t usually wear the same shoes that I wear when running on a clear road. Find either trail running shoes or see if the model of shoe you usually run in has a shoe for running in rain or snow. They have better traction and can your feet dry.
- Wear Layers – staying warm is key, but make sure you don’t overdo it. Too many layers can make the run miserable. Consider an outer layer that resists moisture, an inner layer that wicks away sweat, and gloves. Don’t forget gloves!
- Wear Bright Clothing – You can wear a light or bright clothing with reflectors. Make sure whatever you wear can improve your visibility if you are crossing or running alongside roads.
How you Run Makes a Difference
Running on ice or snow requires a different way of running. You may need to alter your stride to make sure you are comfortable with the traction you have on the snow. A shorter, more conservative stride can provide that confidence. Change your route when you head out. I always hate running on sidewalks, but those are usually treated with salt or shoveled. Avoid running in busy streets if you can. Watch out for “black ice” or ice buried under the snow. Make sure you engage your core as you run to ensure you have balance.
Running in the snow is the best. It makes you feel like you are separated from reality for a brief part of your day. A run through a winter wonderland can do a lot for the mind and body. Get out and enjoy it before winter ends!
