The warmer month of April promises warmer weather and a chance of rain. If you had to run in precipitation, running in the rain is a close second to snow. Don’t let a few showers get you down. Go be a fool out running in the rain. We will cover a few ideas to make it a better experience.
The Fun of Running in the Rain
There is something special about running in the rain in the warmer months. Make sure you are prepared with a few things:
- Weather-resistant shoes – make sure you have shoes that can handle wet weather. While traction is important, having wet feet can make running miserable. If you have shoes that can handle wet conditions, it could be worth it. Make sure you have moisture-wicking socks to prevent blisters.
- Protection for your head – depending on which way the rain is falling and how hard, you will want a hat with a brim and sunglasses to protect your eyes. The toughest part about running in the rain is forgetting after going out that you have to come back to where you started. If the rain is at your back on the way out, it will be unpleasant on the way back without proper protection from the rain.
- Compression or quick drying shorts – the last thing you want is chafing in wet conditions, so grab some quick drying clothing or look for anti-chafing balm.
- Rain jacket – running rain jackets are lightweight, breathable, but still protect you from the rain. A good jacket can go a long way. Pockets with zippers can keep items you carry mostly dry.
- Change of clothes – make sure you have dry clothes to change into when you are done with your run. Prepare clothing that is warmer than you would normally wear to help keep your body warm. Don’t forget dry socks.
Joy that I Found in the Rain
What’s the fun of running in the rain? It’s the joy of being a kid again. Remember those days as a kid of jumping in puddles and rolling around in the wet mud. There’s nothing like the excitement of an early spring run in the rain. It brings out new energy and makes the run exciting.
Not only do you feel like a kid, but it also makes the run feel that much more rewarding. You were able to accomplish a goal in the rain. It feels more rewarding because you were able to achieve it in the elements. If you have the luxury of running in nature, either a running path or trail, nature just looks and feels different. You will be surprised what you will see as you are trying to dodge those puddles. Give it a try and you won’t regret it!
